About ecological transition, decarbonization and HVAC systems

Climate change has made institutions more and more sensitive to the impact we as humans are having on the world we live. The need to preserve and protect the environment has produced a set of rules, programs and actions that have been implemented over the years. One of these is the European Green Deal – a set of policies by the European Commission aiming at making the European Union (EU) climate neutral in 2050.

Carbon neutrality is a topic that is touching many different sectors. Among them, there is the building sector.

As reported by the European Union, the building sector is responsible for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU.

That is the reason why in 2021 the European Union has decided to align the rules for the energy performance of buildings with the European Green Deal and decarbonize the EU's building stock by 2050.

The challenge the HVAC sector is subject to

Within this context, space conditioning (cooling and heating) is identified as a major contributor to buildings energy consumptions (80%), and then to global warming.

This scenario calls the whole HVAC sector for a big challenge: offering more advanced alternatives to traditional space conditioning technologies to help achieving sustainability targets.

Then, to make this happen, it is necessary for the HVAC sector to come up with cooling and heating solutions that can still meet the needs of ever-demanding HVAC projects, while

  • consuming energy in very low amounts
  • drastically reducing CO2 emissions
  • using refrigerants that have the least impact on the environment

Since 40% of the European energy consumption comes from the European building stock, and 80% of a building’s energy consumption is generated from air-conditioning and heating systems, it is necessary to act on these systems to reduce energy consumption and the environmental impact that comes with them. That can only be pursued by replacing traditional cooling and heating systems with more efficient solutions, because more energy efficient cooling and heating systems can reduce the environmental impact by reducing energy consumptions, and both direct and indirect emissions.

Daikin’s effort

Daikin, besides offering reliability and quality standards associated with the brand, is well-known for developing advanced technology with the aim of minimizing the impact of the air-conditioning sector on the environment.

Since the founding, Daikin has focused on developing technology that could help solving social and community problems while growing business. The group strives to meet expectations and maintain trust worldwide as a global company that supports human health and comfort while creating new value for the environment and reducing the human impact on the environment. That is why Daikin has a special attention on developing sustainable and highly efficient technologies, and besides that, work to constantly reduce the environmental impact during production processes.

As part of the Daikin group, Daikin Applied Europe’s approach to sustainability begins with ensuring that factories use the least amount of energy, which is only certified green energy, generated from renewable sources. That allows to make sure that the environmental impact of the production processes implemented in the factories is minimized.

Then, of course, Daikin products for the Applied sector, just like those for the residential sector, are designed to provide the best performance in the market in terms of energy efficiency – among the other things.

This goal is constantly pursued with the development of proprietary technology, that enhances the performance of Daikin chillers and heat pumps.

That is the case of the screw compressor by Daikin, for instance, which, thanks to the optimized screw profile, can work with low GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants always providing very high energy efficiency levels.

And then, it is the case of the Daikin Inverter technology, which is integrated to many Daikin chillers and heat pumps, allowing them to reduce consumptions by optimizing the use of energy and eliminating energy waste.

All these solutions aim at helping reduce the impact HVAC technology have on the environment, offering new generation technologies that are 32% more efficient than traditional technologies, and that can, for instance, help design heating systems with that can be up to 30% more efficient than those based on traditional technologies such as boilers.

Besides technology, then, Daikin also extends this approach to circular economy with refrigerant reclamation.

Specifically, with the Loop program by Daikin, refrigerants such as R-410a, R134a and R-32 are easily recovered, regenerated, and reused, eliminating the environmental impact of endo-of-life refrigerant disposal.
