Advantages of air-sourced heat pumps for residential heating

Comfort is a key aspect in residential applications as it ensures a good indoor environment. Equally important is energy efficiency, which not only reduces running costs but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Therefore, choosing heating solutions that combine comfort with high energy efficiency is essential to improving quality of life and contributing to a more sustainable future. In this respect, heat pumps offer numerous advantages. For this reason, it is now essential to consider their use instead of boilers for domestic heating, both in the renovation of existing systems and in new buildings.

Air-to-water heat pumps for residential heating

Daikin can offer a wide range of solutions that can be integrated into traditional systems. These solutions can reduce environmental impact and achieve cost savings. In particular, the new Daikin EWYE-CZ air-sourced heat pump. It uses R-454C refrigerant, known for its low global warming potential (GWP) of 145.5, making it an excellent option for projects where sustainability is a priority. It minimises the overall carbon footprint while ensuring efficient and reliable performance. Its operating range for heating water is from +20°C to +70°C, while the ambient temperature range (OAT) is from -25°C to 35°C. The capacity range varies from 16 to 70 kW.

Can Daikin heat pumps replace a boiler?

The advantages of switching from using a boiler to a heat pump for residential heating are many. First, energy efficiency. According to The Future of Heat Pumps, a report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA), heat pumps are significantly more efficient than conventional heating technologies such as boilers or electric heaters and can be less expensive to operate. The coefficient of performance (COP) for a typical domestic heat pump is around four, meaning the energy output is four times greater than the electricity used to run it. This makes current models three to five times more energy efficient than gas boilers.

This not only lowers energy costs but also reduces CO₂ emissions. In addition to this, the Daikin EWYE-CZ heat pump is a versatile solution for all types of residential applications, whether single or multi-family houses or apartment blocks, as it can provide hot water up to +70 °C. Thereby, in case of space heating, EWYE-CZ can be easily combined with different types of terminals, such as fan coils or traditional radiators. In addition, EWYE-CZ can also produce domestic hot water and integrates an anti-legionella control function for the external tank. The range includes eight model sizes from 16 kW to 70 kW, keeping a very compact design across the models, making it an ideal choice for projects with limited space, such as residential buildings. All models ensure operation in ambient temperatures from -25°C to +40°C, thereby delivering desired comfort even under very low winter temperatures. On top of that, the integrated defrost logic prevents simultaneous defrosting, reducing water consumption and improving customer comfort by minimising temperature drops and ensuring a more even distribution of the heating load. Finally, a low-noise version is available, making it particularly suitable for noise-sensitive applications.

Delivery time for residential heating heat pumps

As residential buildings constitute 75% of the total buildings in Europe, many HVAC projects are related to those buildings. Therefore, it is preeminent to devise appropriate solutions to guarantee the required lead times. By having units readily available, Daikin can provide a prompt service, responding quickly to customer requirements and offering greater flexibility. This approach minimizes waiting times and allows customers to receive and install units as quickly as possible. In addition, EWYE-CZ also includes an integrated inverter water pump, furtherly simplifying installation and optimising space utilisation. Finally, Daikin has an extensive support network, enabling rapid and efficient organization of commissioning activities.

Achieving efficiency while reducing operating costs

Thanks to full inverter technology, the Daikin EWYE-CZ high temperature heat pump delivers outstanding performance. The Daikin Inverter Scroll compressors, and Daikin Inverter driven fans ensure high efficiency and low running costs. This combination makes the new R-454C small inverter heat pump a fully inverter-driven unit, able to adapt to the cooling and heating load profile of the building. This adaptability is key to keep HVAC system running costs low during part-load conditions, which make up most of the system's operating time. By efficiently responding to changing needs, the unit improves energy efficiency and delivers significant savings over time. Furthermore, the EWYE-CZ small inverter heat pump is designed to operate in master/slave mode, optimising the operation of up to four units. In this configuration, the master unit manages the slave units connected in parallel on the same hydraulic system. The master unit adjusts the operation of the slave units according to specific system requirements and external weather conditions, reducing energy waste. This results in better overall system performance, increased operational reliability and longer equipment life.

About the reliability of heat pumps: remote monitoring and preventive maintenance

Keeping HVAC systems up and running is a critical priority, especially in applications where critical activities take place. The availability of intelligent remote monitoring technology has enabled plant managers to ensure that HVAC equipment is functioning properly and allowed service technicians to resolve issues remotely. Daikin's cloud platform, Daikin on Site (DoS), makes it easy to remotely monitor and optimise system performance and continuously update software. Daikin on Site enables engineers around the world to monitor, manage, and control HVAC systems in real time directly from the cloud. Using DoS, Daikin also offers a predictive maintenance service to prevent faults and breakdowns. Remote diagnostic support helps to prolong system life, and the ability to manage multiple sites is ideal for those overseeing numerous installations. The ability to act quickly to rectify a fault is a particularly valued benefit, as slowing down or stopping production for hours, if not days, can cause serious inconvenience or even damage to a business. Daikin has an extensive Service Solutions network, which allows it to be locally present in various countries and provide preventive maintenance services and rapid intervention when needed.
