Daikin Applied Europe: commitment to sustainability

Daikin as a group has always focused on sustainability, developing advanced technology with the aim to help solving social and community problems while growing business. This has made Daikin a trusted brand worldwide, recognized for supporting human health and comfort while creating new value for air and the environment. That is why Daikin has a special attention to reducing human impact on the environments and – besides developing environmentally sustainable and highly efficient technologies – constantly work to reduce the environmental impact during production processes Group-wide.

The effort in minimizing the environmental impact starting from the factories

As part of the Daikin group, Daikin Applied Europe is fully aligned with this vision.

That is why the company carries out activities aiming at constantly reducing the factories’ impact on the environment and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

Among these activities there are those aiming to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions, which is mainly achieved by using energy that is entirely produced from renewable sources. That has produced substantial results over the years, constantly reducing the CO2 generated in the factories.

In the last 5 years, for instance, Daikin Applied Europe avoided emissions in the atmosphere for about 20,000 ton of CO2, improving in fiscal year 2021 the results from 2020 by 18%, despite the recent expansion of the Chiller factory. Most of this result has been produced by the used of energy from renewable sources.

Besides that, Daikin Applied Europe is continuously monitoring industrial processes to further reduce the environmental impact.

The monitoring activities include waste management to have a constant reduction of the overall quantity of waste sent to landfill. That is being achieved, seeking year by year improvement, through careful management of separate waste collection and continuous improvement of staff awareness through trainings.

Then, the reduction of water consumption for industrial activities, is another goal that Daikin Applied strives to achieve. That is being pursued through the use and installation of water flow meters, which help monitoring water use, and detect unusual spikes of water consumptions. This monitoring activities, of course, allows to optimize the use of water, avoiding waste and addressing anomalies. But the goal is also being pursued by introducing Industrial water recovery systems, which allow to reuse water for industrial processes and tests.

This attitude and attention towards the use of water has produces interesting results, leading to savings in water consumptions in fiscal year 2021 for about 15.000 m3 – minus 28% compared to fiscal year 2020.

Daikin’s path towards environmental sustainability

Daikin is well-known for having made the LEAN approach their own.

The LEAN approach is a 360° approach involving all aspects related to the product, from the design and the manufacturing processes to the quality tests. This requires an involvement of all company’s functions, so manufacturing processes can be less complex and waste in all forms can be avoided.

That ensures the manufacturing process will only include activities that will produce value, and production lines will be organized in a way that will not only help operators using their time and energies in the most efficient way. But also means being able to ensure absolute quality of the products, punctual delivery, and minimizing the impact on the environment effectively managing waste production, energy and water use, and resources.

Along with this approach, Daikin constantly focus on creating awareness across the management structure, the employees and those who work on behalf of the organization, with the aim to create a culture of accountability. With this spirit, greater responsibility is given to all employees in terms of environmental safeguarding, also providing adequate and frequent trainings.

Challenging goals for a more sustainable future

All the above-mentioned activities and behaviours, fall in the set of actions Daikin is taking to realize the environmental vision.

Daikin has developed a log-term strategy, making predictions on how society will change by 2050, and programming actions to contribute creating a better future.

In the Environment Vision 2050, Daikin has set the achievement of net zero greenhouse gas emissions from company business activities as a goal to achieve by 2050.

To achieve this challenging goal, the company has set an intermediate target for a 30% reduction by 2030 (the reduction is calculated by comparing business-as-usual emissions using fiscal year 2015 as the base year), and established measures that will finally lead to carbon neutrality.

Of course, among the targets there is a further optimization of the industrial processes and related manufacturing activities.
