The Annex (project) 54 is a workshop event within the HPT (Heat Pumping Technologies) TCP (Technology Collaboration Programme) by the International Energy Agency (IEA). It aims at promoting low-GWP refrigerant application to accelerate phase-down of high-GWP HFCs. This year Daikin will take part presenting the work done in relation to its low GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerant solutions, which produced an important contribute in terms of technological progress for the whole HVAC sector. Especially with the new R-32 heat pump series.

On the 24th of June, Daikin Applied Europe will have the pleasure to give a presentation during the Annex (project) 54, focusing on the work done to develop new solutions using low GWP refrigerants such as the R-32 and the R-1234ze refrigerants. Specifically, Daikin Applied Europe will focus on the work of research and development that led to the release on the market of the R-32 product series, recently completed with the new Daikin heat pump with R-32 refrigerant.

About Annex 54

The Annex 54 is an international workshop event within the HPT (Heat Pumping Technologies) TCP (Technology Collaboration Programme) by the International Energy Agency (IEA). During this event there will be presentations by experts from different participating countries. This event aims at promoting low-GWP refrigerant application and accelerate the phase-down of high-GWP HFCs by developing design guidelines of optimized heat pump components and systems for low-GWP refrigerants.

Annex 54 aligns with IEA’s vision and mission to promote new, alternative or natural refrigerants with low-GWP for heat pumps. By engaging experts world-wide, the annex promotes environmental awareness to policy makers.

Annex goal

Global warming today is an issue that affects everyone. As the climate is changing, the need for air-conditioning and heat pump systems is rising: especially in developing countries like India and other countries in Asia. While developed countries like European countries are already gradually abandoning coal, oil and natural gas, which are a cause for global warming.

The air conditioning sector can further help takling the issue of global warming. For instance, with a switch from high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant such as R410A, to low Global Warming Potential refrigerants, like R-32, to reduce the carbon footprint of air conditioning technology.

This is something urgent, that needs to be done as quickly as possible, since air conditioning demand will increase by three time by 2050 (*). In order to make this happen, it is important to educate people, in particular leaders, so they can make the right decision. This is what the Annex 54 does. Educating. Helping continue the research on low GWP refrigerants. And also helping discussing the topic openly. Spreading knowledge, in order to develop guidelines on how to use low Global Warming Potential refrigerants.

Daikin experience and expertice

Daikin Applied Europe will take part in this event bringing to the table the experience gained during these years, where Daikin has stood out for its commitment to producing low impact technology using low GWP refrigerants.

Daikin, being a sustainability-oriented company by nature, is naturally prone to produce technology that can meet customers’ expectations while both supporting human health and respecting the environment.

In fact, Daikin commits to reduce greenhouse gas emissions promoting environment-conscious products using inverter and low impact refrigerants. Like the R-32.

The use of refrigerants that can perfectly balance sustainability, performance, cost-effectiveness and safety, is a guideline that Daikin adopts in the development of its products. For this reason, Daikin uses R-32 refrigerant on most of its residential products, and from 2018 it has extended its use to the Applied product portfolio, i.e. those machines intended to cool large industrial and commercial buildings. This is because R-32 is a refrigerant that can perfectly balance the previously mentioned aspects: sustainability, performance, cost-effectiveness and safety.

Daikin and R-32 for Applied solutions

On July 2018, Daikin Applied Europe developed and releasing to the market the first chiller in the industry to use R-32 refrigerant - the EWAT-B. This range has been offering incredibly high energy efficiency levels and a very reduced impact on the environment.

Being first in developing technologies often results in being technological leaders. That gives unrivalled understanding of how to meet customers’ needs and expectations with that technology.

To date, with the EWAT-B, Daikin has provided 400,000 kW of cooling capacity in HVAC projects all around the world, making thousands of customers satisfied.

The new heat pump with R-32 refrigerant

These were the basis for the development of the new Daikin heat pump featuring R-32. A series that completes the Daikin Bluevolution range for the Applied sector, providing the best performance ever offered in the market.

The new R-32 heat pump EWYT-B- reflects Daikin will to lead the way again towards more sustainable and technologically advanced solutions.

The EWYT-B- is the first heat pump in the Market – in this capacity range – to feature R-32. It provides the lowest combined levels of direct and indirect CO2 emissions. That is possible thanks to the low GWP R-32 refrigerant, which allowed to offer the best in class efficiency levels both in cooling and in heating modes, not only resulting in substantial savings for the user, but also ensuring minimized impact on the environment.

Of course, all that was achieved through a meticulous work in terms of optimization of the components, which has led to important results both in terms of performances and combined CO2 emissions.
