Daikin recently supplied one air-cooled Inverter Screw chiller EWAH-TZ D with R-1234ze refrigerant to meet the cooling needs of an office building for an important ship management company.

Total cooling capacity: 537.3 kW
This project involves the refurbishment of an existing building constructed in 2001, with a focus on a preventive replacement strategy. The customer's main requirements include reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the company's overall decarbonisation plan and complying with EU regulations for low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants.
This project involved the replacement of a Daikin unit after 23 years of reliable operation. This is evidence of the customer's positive experience and satisfaction with the Daikin brand, and the quality of the Daikin’s after-sales service and support received over the years. This attention to detail ensures ongoing environmental compliance, consistently high performance and continued customer satisfaction.
The customer's main objective was to manage the cooling loads of the building and at the same time be in line with the decarbonisation project. To overcome this, the customer decided to replace the old units, which had screw compressors without Inverters and using R-134a refrigerant, with a new unit with an Inverter Screw Compressor and R1234ze refrigerant. The Inverter technology can reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, and together with the refrigerant R-1234ze emissions are further reduced thanks to its low GWP. The changes made have therefore improved the environmental impact by addressing both direct and indirect emissions.
Another customer's crucial requirement in this project was on the footprint of the unit, as the new unit had to fit into the space occupied by the previous ones. Daikin was able to meet this requirement thanks to the redesign of EWAH-TZ D unit condensing section vs the previous vintage. As a result, this Daikin range is truly compact, averaging about 1 metre shorter than comparable competitive products.
The majority of HVAC equipment operates at part-load conditions for extended periods resulting in chiller compressor off-design operation for many hours. The units are equipped with Inverters or Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) to ensure optimal performance even at part loads. Thanks to this technology the capacity of the compressor is set according to the demand, matching different load requirements and leading to substantial energy savings. Moreover, the drive is cooled directly by the refrigerant allowing for continuous operation regardless of environmental conditions. The result is providing the most efficient capacity control method, leading to lower operating costs.
For the replacement of the old unit, the customer chose to continue to rely on the same supplier and to turn again to Daikin for the delivery of the new unit. This decision was based on the reliability and efficiency of Daikin's equipment and its after-sales services.
Daikin knows that prioritising maintenance and repairs is crucial to maintaining the longevity and efficiency of the unit. To meet this, Daikin offers a preventive maintenance plan based on its own standards, which aims to detail all the activities to be carried out on field and the components to be checked and replaced throughout the equipment’s life cycle.
That said, another important consideration is the availability of spare sparts. By agreement with the customer, Daikin can also manage a spare part’s stock directly at the customer premises, thus ensuring simplified management of maintenance operations.
To further ensure operational efficiency, contain costs and maintain the overall stability of the operations, preventive measures are essential. To meet this, Daikin offers the Daikin on Site (DoS) service, enabling real-time assessment of system operating conditions. It identifies potential issues before they impact performance and reliability, allowing for timely and appropriate interventions to be planned. This innovative cloud-based service provides remote monitoring, giving detailed insight into unit performance. By providing instant alerts and allowing remote adjustments, it enables rapid identification and resolution of problems, improving asset reliability. It also helps technicians anticipate and prepare for potential problems, streamlining maintenance tasks and minimizing HVAC system downtime.
