New Smart Control System for turnkey HVAC plant operation

Daikin announces release of Smart Control System (SCS), a control solution suitable to manage hydronic plants including chillers, heat pumps, air handling units and fan coils. The solution, developed by Daikin, will be available soon, in January 2025. SCS allows optimization of working conditions of a whole HVAC system, focusing on comfort applications as light commercial, offices, small and medium hotels.

Overview of the system

SCS is the latest development of Daikin control solutions dedicated to management of hydronic HVAC plants, facilitating design, installation and operation. By means of SCS, a complete Daikin solution can be designed and supplied, including: chillers, heat pumps, air handling units (AHUs) and fan coils. SCS is available as an external panel, to be connected to the units in the system via Modbus protocol.

The above scheme describes a simplified architecture, where Daikin Products (heat pumps, AHUs, fan coils) are managed by SCS through Modbus/RS485 communication. That implies SCS is controlling and optimizing the entire system, including:

  • The common water outlet temperature sensor wired to the first chiller / heat pump
  • The pumps mounted on chillers
  • Eventual manifolded pumps

Control system configurations

Smart Control System is offered in three main configurations, allowing for scalability in hardware,
license and price. Each version can manage up to 4 chillers or heat pumps with a total cooling capacity of up to 500 kW and additional equipment as follows:

  1. Light (up 500 datapoints): up to 20 fan coil’s zones or 10 AHUs
  1. Medium (up 1250 datapoints): up to 70 fan coil’s zones, or 10 AHUs + 50 fan coils’ zones
  1. Full (up 2500 datapoints): up to 120 fan coil’s zones, or 10 AHUs + 100 fan coils’ zones

A fan coil zone can consist of up to 30 fan coils, managed via a dedicated controller, also developed and supplied by Daikin.

Product coverage

SCS is available to manage plants composed of the equipment as follows, offering flexibility to cover many different applications and installations.

Chillers & heat pumps

  • EWAT-CZ air-cooled chillers and EWYT-CZ air-to-water heat pumps, with Daikin inverter scroll compressor and using R-32 refrigerant, available from 16 to 90 kW capacity in standard design conditions;

The 8 good reasons to choose Daikin Smart Control System

Nowadays, HVAC plant design requires consideration for plant performance over its whole lifetime, to keep CO2 emissions and running costs as low as possible. Daikin SCS makes this possible, as it ensures optimal control of units in the system, in every condition, for many different plant configurations and with minimum design and installation effort. The reasons indicated below explain the product-related advantages, leading to consistent benefits for designers, consultants, and end customers.

Reason #1: being developed by Daikin, SCS represents the best configuration to optimize performances, as it makes use of information from units’ sensors and controllers.

Reason #2: being available in 3 configurations (Light – Medium – Full), it can easily adapt to many different projects and installations, opening new opportunities to optimize running costs in small to medium sized HVAC plants.

Reason #3: with SCS, Daikin is providing a turnkey solution, facilitating the work of plant designers and consultants.

Reason #4: SCS ensures optimal operation of the plant by means of its advanced optimization logics. In every condition, SCS determines the best working configuration for the units, prioritizing comfort along with keeping an eye on system efficiency and running costs. Indeed, Smart Defrosting feature makes sure heating is provided in every case. As well, Advanced Staging algorithms, Chilled / heated water temperature optimisation and Pumping optimisation logics make sure all working conditions are kept under control and set in the most appropriate configurations.

Reason #5: Plug & play installation. SCS requires only the external panel and few additional sensors. Every unit is then connected via Modbus in series to ensure connection to SCS. A simple system, leveraging mainly on sensors mounted on board the units in the system.

Reason #6: Smart system architecture. It makes SCS highly competitive vs third-party control systems, that would need many extra sensors

Reason #7: Optimized lifetime reliability. SCS improves reliability of the entire system, through optimization of the working conditions of the units in the system, then leading to extended life of the HVAC system. As well, it reduces maintenance costs related to manpower and spare parts, even in comparison vs third party's control systems, as less sensors are used to control the system.

Reason #8: Fast implementation. It can be easily performed by the Daikin technician during commissioning, avoiding extra costs for configuration of third-party specialized systems.
