Daikin has recently been involved in the commissioning of three water-cooled chiller units at CERN.
The project required the installation of the units at Building 141, another facility housing equipment powering accelerators at the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
Products
3x EWWH-VZ water-cooled chillers with screw inverter compressor and R-1234ze refrigerant
Total cooling capacity: 2,220 kW (including 740 kW for redundancy)
About the project
The Building 141 houses a cooling plant providing cooling for power converters and power supplies of the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) and the Proton Synchrotron accelerators (PS), which are key components in CERN’s accelerator complex.
The main needs for this project, as usually happens for CERN’s labs, were:
About the solution provided by Daikin
For this project, all the aspects mentioned above were addressed using chillers from the Daikin VZ range of units.
The VZ series perfectly met CERN’s needs, thanks to Daikin In-house designed Inverter Single Screw compressor technology, which can guarantee exceptionally high efficiency levels. That happens especially when the units are operating at partial loads. In fact, thanks to the inverter, directly integrated in the compressor, the chillers can perfectly match the cooling capacity demand from the facility, which might change based on the workload of the equipment that needs to be cooled down.

Besides energy efficiency, the environmental impact aspect was addressed by using units with HFO refrigerant R-1234ze, which ensures a GWP value (Global Warming Potential) as low as 7.
The newly redesigned single screw compressor by Daikin stands out for providing outstanding performances despite the compact footprint. That is possible thanks to the new screw profile, which allows the compressor to be perfectly optimized for operations with R-1234ze refrigerant.
The single screw compressor also helped giving the HVAC system reliability.
Daikin has a history of leadership in the field of single screw compressor chillers, which have been installed all over the world for 20 years.
Daikin screw compressor, besides being well-knows for efficiency, differently from standard screw compressors, it uses one main screw meshing with twin star rotors to produce volume matching compression cycle. Due to the main rotor, balanced in both radial and axial direction, the compressor bearing has extremely high reliability. Therefore, its life span can be significantly longer than other screw compressors. Then, having only three moving parts, possibilities of failure are minimized and operation costs kept low.
