Daikin has recently been involved in the commissioning of two air-cooled chiller units at CERN.
The project required the installation of two chiller units at the Building 251, a facility powering equipment used to create magnetic fields for experiments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
Products
2x EWAT-B- R-32 air-cooled scroll chillers
Total cooling capacity: 652 kW (including 326 kW for redundancy)
About the project
The Building 251 houses power converters supplying power to the magnets of the East Area an experimental area related to the Proton Synchrotron accelerator (PS), which is used as a pre-accelerator for the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), and is currently part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator complex.
The chillers provided are used to cool down the power converters through air handling units, so the heat they generate can be dissipated, ensuring the reliability and correct functioning of the power supply system.
The main needs for this project, as usually happens for CERN’s labs, were:
- compliance with regulations,
- need for an energy efficient solution,
- and absolute reliability given the importance of the activities carries out at CERN’s laboratories.
About the solution provided by Daikin
For this project, all the aspects mentioned above were addressed using chillers from the Bluevolution range, which, thanks to R-32 refrigerant, not only ensures very high energy efficiency levels, and low CO2 direct and indirect emissions, but also opens up the possibility to use reclaimed refrigerant.

Reliability, then, was guaranteed by the huge experience Daikin has in R-32 technology development, with an unparalleled number of installations across the world.
