Daikin has been recently involved in the commissioning of new air-cooled chillers at CERN.
The project required the installation of the two machines at the BA4 building, a facility housing equipment related to the functioning of one of the accelerators at the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

The Building BA4 is one of the facilities housing power converters, electrical switchboards, and cooling equipment used for the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator and the experiments being performed with it.
The Super Proton Synchrotron is a particle accelerator of the synchrotron type which accelerates protons and heavy ions to provide beams for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and for experiments such as NA62 and COMPASS.
Of course, all the equipment in the Building BA4 needs to be cooled down to dissipate the heat generated, otherwise malfunctioning of the accelerator might occur, and experiments might be affected. For this purpose, in the context of its consolidation program, CERN decided to replace two old chillers with new Daikin air-cooled chillers. The main needs for this consolidation project were:
About the solution provided by Daikin
The aspects mentioned for this project were addressed using chillers from the TZ range, which, thanks to R-1234ze refrigerant, and the high efficiency levels guaranteed by the Daikin screw compressor with inverter directly integrated onto it, can guarantee a minimized environmental impact.

The newly redesigned single screw compressor also helped the Daikin solution to meet the space constraints in this project, as units compatible with existing metal frames were needed.
The newly redesigned Daikin single screw compressor stands out for providing outstanding performances with R-1234ze while maintaining a compact unit’s footprint, which was exactly what was needed in this project.
The single screw compressor also helped giving the HVAC system reliability.
Daikin has a history of leadership in the field of single screw compressor chillers, which have been installed all over the world for 20 years.
Daikin screw compressor, besides being well-knows for efficiency, differently from standard screw compressors, it uses one main screw meshing with twin star rotors to produce volume matching compression cycle. Due to the main rotor, balanced in both radial and axial direction, the compressor bearing has extremely high reliability. Therefore, its life span can be significantly longer than other screw compressors. Then, having only three moving parts, possibilities of failure are minimized and operation costs kept low.
